If Only I Could Write

I don’t know where I would start,

If only I could write,

To tell of things in my heart

And warm you in the night.

I want to say many things

With words so good and true,

Heaven echoes when I sing

These words of love for you.

If I could write a pretty thing

That brings a happy tear,

I would write for you to sing

In hopes to draw you near.

I would sit with pen in hand

And try with all my might

If I could make dreams to stand

By anything I write.

If my writing made you smile

And set your heart aglow,

Warmed by love for just awhile,

Then happiness would show.

If I could set your love free

And let your spirit soar

High above to fly to me,

Then I would write some more.

If I had words within me

That could make a dream come true,

Then those words would surely be

My heart’s gift of love to you.

I would not mind to remain

And labor through the night

To give to you love’s refrain-

If only I could write.
